Frequently Asked Questions--Link to SMTP/Link to UUCP

(Note: These questions are taken from the Lotus cc:Mail forum on
CompuServe.)

The following are frequently asked questions regarding Link to SMTP/Link
to UUCP.

Question

Where can I get a free/shareware copy of UUDECODE for DOS?

Answer

Try the following areas on CompuServe:

GO UNIXFO
GO INETFORUM (in Library 5, "Electronic mail" UU520.ZIP)

The CIM support forums also have UUENCODE and UUDECODE as well as MIME
utilities for both DOS and Windows. On the Internet, the SimTel FTP
mirror site at oak.oakland.edu also contains UUENCODE/UUDECODE DOS and
Windows utilities.

Question

Does Link to SMTP/Link to UUCP support MIME?

Answer

The current version of these two products does not have internal MIME
support. You can use one of the many DOS MIME encoders/decoders with
cc:Mail's CMP (custom message processing) facility to include this
functionality. More information on using the CMP facility can be found
in Appendix C of the Link to SMTP 2.1 manual, Appendix G of the Link to
SMTP 2.0 manual (it is called "custom message-handling program" in
SMTPLINK 2.0x) and Appendix D of the Link to UUCP 2.0 manual.

A native SMTP/MIME MTA is a key component of our future LCS (Lotus
Communications Strategy)-based product. This new product will merge the
routing and administrative functions of cc:Mail and Notes. Lotus is
planning to have this native SMTP/MIME product available on our second
release of LCS. Our first release is currently scheduled to release
mid-year 1995.

You can also consider third party products that offer MIME support for
SMTP. Take a look at the cc:Mail Third Party Catalog for a listing of
vendors. CC-3RD.ZIP is available on the cc:Mail BBS (File Area 1),
Lotus FTP Server (/pub/comm/ccmail/3rdparty), and CompuServe (LotusM,
Library 2).

Question

Is there an easy way to update the SMTP.ADR file?

Answer

A third party utility is available called SMTP.ADR Builder (SMTPBDR)
written by Jim Chen that can convert exported cc:Mail directory entries
into SMTP.ADR entries. L-Team member Dale Johnson is distributing this
for the author. This utility is at Dale's FTP site,
http://world.std.com/~dalewj. (The author does not want it posted to
CompuServe.) Another third party utility is available called
SMTPADR.ZIP, which also creates a SMTP.ADR file based on your cc:Mail
directory. It can be found on the cc:Mail BBS (File Area 1) and on the
Lotus FTP Server (/pub/comm/ccmail/3rdparty).
