(Note: These questions are taken from the Lotus cc:Mail forum on
CompuServe.)
The following are frequently asked questions regarding cc:Mail for
Windows.
Question
Can I run my vacation rules when my computer is off?
Answer
No. cc:Mail for Windows 2.x features workstation-based rules, which
require the computer to be on and logged into your post office. As an
alternative to using rules for vacation purposes, a few third party
programs are available as follows:
* Out of the Office (Cobblestone Software)
10082 Rock Rose Court
Parker, CO 80134
Tel: 303-840-9545
Fax: 303-840-9539
* Absentee Manager (e-MailWare Dev.)
Puttebroekstraat 2
3012 Wilsele
Belgium
Tel: +32-16-445463
Internet: Frank.Turley@DAVISBLX.SMDCI.LANGATE.sprint.com
* Redirector (C2C Systems)
CompuServe: 76100,2305
Tel: 800-449-0506 or 206-885-7888
* Mail Scout (Peloria Technology)
348 East Olive Avenue, Suite G
Burbank, CA 91502
Tel: 818-840-0500
Fax: 818-840-6726

Demo versions of these programs are available in the CompuServe LotusM
library.
Question
How can I have the new mail notify dialog box stay on the screen longer?
It seems to stay up for a minute and disappear.
Answer
Modify your WMAIL.INI file, which is located in your user directory (you
can find the user directory location by clicking Help-About cc:Mail).
Add the following entry under the [cc:Mail] section:
[cc:Mail]
Timeout=x
where x is in minutes. A value of 5, for example, specifies a timeout
interval of 5 minutes. A value of 0 will keep the dialog box on the
screen until you click the OK button.
If you need to have the new mail dialog box stay up in seconds rather
than in minutes, add a comma and the letter "s" to indicate the value is
in seconds. For example, Timeout=30,s indicates a timeout value of 30
seconds.
Question
Does cc:Mail for Windows work with MS Windows for Workgroups?
Answer
Yes, cc:Mail for Windows works in a WFWG (Windows for Workgroups)
environment. You need to be aware that WFWG uses a form of map rooting
when you are sharing a drive. If you install cc:Mail out of the box
without changing some of the defaults (on both the Install and on the
shared drive for the WFWG workstation designated as server), you receive
the following error message:
M:\: Not a post office directory
On the WFWG workstation acting as the mail server, you need to move the
cc:Mail directories one subdirectory level deeper. For example, instead
of the post office files being located in C:\CCDATA, they need to be in
C:\CCDATA\CCDATA. For example:
C:\
-C:\CCADMIN\CCADMIN
-C:\CCDATA\CCDATA
-C:\CCMAIL\CCMAIL
-C:\CCMAIL\CCMAIL\CCUSER
The cc:Mail directories off the root of C: (C:\CCADMIN, C:\CCDATA,
C:\CCMAIL) can then be shared in File Manager. To the Workstation
Installation program, it sees the mapped drive letter plus the directory
underneath it. For example, if I assigned drive M: to the WFWG "mail
server's" C:\CCDATA directory, I will see it as M:\ and be able to see
the second CCDATA directory underneath it as follows:
Another WFWG WFWG Workstation
Workstation Containing PO Files
M:\ = C:\CCDATA
M:\CCDATA = C:\CCDATA\CCDATA
Or, instead of using the child directory method, you can create a
directory structure of:
C:\MAIL
-\MAIL\CCADMIN
-\MAIL\CCDATA
-\MAIL\CCMAIL
-\MAIL\CCMAIL\CCUSER
and share the C:\MAIL directory. This format might make directory
management easier for Windows for Workgroups.
Question
I get a GPF (general protection fault) when I run cc:Mail for Windows.
What can I do?
Answer
The following are some things to check when you get GPFs:
* Check the \TEMP directory. Check to see that it is listed properly in
your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. It should be empty when Windows is not loaded
and should have 5MB of available space.
* How much memory is on the computer? If you are running cc:Mail along
with a large program, you should have at least 8MB.
* What video driver are you using? If you are using an SVGA driver, try
the VGA driver that comes with Windows, and see if it makes a
difference.
* Are you excluding video RAM? Go into your SYSTEM.INI file, and add a
line to the bottom of the [386enh] section as follows:
EMMEXCLUDE=A000-C7FF (substituting the address of your video card, if
known)
* Boot with a "vanilla" AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS, and see if the
problem still occurs.
* Make sure that WINSTART.BAT does not exist in your \WINDOWS directory.
* If you are using a temporary swap file, start using a permanent swap
file.
* Make sure that the PATH in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file is not longer than
128 characters.
* If you are loading ANSI.SYS, disable it.
* Is anything loading in the Startup Group? If so, remove it, and try
again. If that is the problem, try putting things back in the Startup
Group in a different order.
* Check the DLL load path to be sure you have the latest cc:Mail DLLs in
the path. You can download the latest cc:Mail DLLs from the cc:Mail BBS
(File Area 23), Lotus FTP Server (/pub/comm/ccmail/vim) and CompuServe
(LOTUSC, Library 15) as VDLWIN.ZIP.
* If you use Calendar Creator Plus for Windows, do not load it or remove
it from the path. Earlier releases have a conflicting CCUTIL.DLL.
Contact PowerUp or your software vendor for the latest release of
Calendar Creator Plus.
* If you are using QEMM, disable stealth.
* Make sure your files= is at least 75 or 100.
* Try deleting (or renaming) the CCMAIL.CFG in your CC1DIR/MB1DIR
subdirectory (or whichever one is in use.)
* Do not run older releases of WNOTIFY.
* Turn off 32-bit access (Control Panel, 386 enhanced, Virtual Memory,
Change).
Question
How can I preserve my column (window) settings in cc:Mail for Windows?
I can change them but I cannot save their position.
Answer
Either press SHIFT-F2 or click the Save Window Defaults Now option,
which is in the Window's Control menu (located in the upper-left corner
or by simultaneously pressing the ALT and the hyphen keys).
Question
Does cc:Mail for Windows have a computer-based tutorial?
Answer
Contact LearnPC at 800-532-7672 for further information on their
"cc:Mail Made Easy" network-based interactive cc:Mail training tutorial.
A more complete description of it appears in our Third Party Catalog,
CC-3RD.ZIP, which can be found on the cc:Mail BBS (File Area 1), Lotus
FTP Server (/pub/comm/ccmail/3rdparty), and on CompuServe (LotusM,
Library 14).
Question
Can cc:Mail for Windows run on Windows NT?
Answer
Yes. Beginning with release 2.1 of both the LAN and Mobile clients,
cc:Mail for Windows is supported under NT 3.5.
Question
In cc:Mail for Windows, I receive the Message cannot be read message in
my Inbox or folders. What can I do?
Answer
This error message may be a sign of a post office corruption that is
either being caused by hardware or software. Make sure File Access
Protection is enabled in ADMIN (in Change Post Office Profile). Check
with your cc:Mail Administrator .
You can delete these messages in the Windows client by first disabling
the Trash Folder (in version 2.x, Tools, User Setup, Special Folders)
and then deleting those messages. You or your cc:Mail Administrator
should also take a look at the NFTERROR.LOG file located in the post
office directory to see if you have an NFT Read or Write error. Running
ANALYZE on the post office would also help determine if anything else is
wrong.
Question
Is there a list of DDE commands available for cc:Mail for Windows?
Answer
Refer to Appendix C in the cc:Mail for Windows User's Guide.
Question
How can I mail enable Word for Windows with cc:Mail for Windows?
Answer
Ordinarily, if cc:Mail for Windows is already installed when Word for
Windows is installed, the Word installation should detect cc:Mail and
add the appropriate functionality to Word. If Word was installed first,
then cc:Mail for Windows was installed, you need to check the following
items manually:
* Make sure you are using Word for Windows 6.0a or 6.0c (contact
Microsoft for the update files).
* Check to see that you have the file MAPIVIM.DLL (size 55754, 1-14-94)
in the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory (it normally comes with Word for
Windows).
* Check these files for the following entries:
WINWORD.INI file: [Mail]
MAPIDLL=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MAPIVIM.DLL MAPI=1
WIN.INI file: [LotusMail]
Application=wMail
Program=M:\CCMAIL\WMAIL.EXE SENDMAIL
[Mail]
SMI=1
MAPI=1
MAPIDLL=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MAPIVIM.DLL MAPIVIMLastAB=0
Question
I cannot view WordPerfect for Windows 6.0 or Microsoft Word for Windows
6.0 attachments in cc:Mail Mobile for Windows. Why?
Answer
If you are using cc:Mail for Windows 2.00 through 2.1 or cc:Mail Mobile
for Windows 2.01 through 2.1, the filters that accompany the software
can only view WordPerfect 5.2 and Word 1.x and 2.x documents. A list of
filters and what they can view appear on page 219 in the cc:Mail for
Windows User's Guide. Release 2.2 and later of cc:Mail Desktop for
Windows and Mobile for Windows feature new file viewers for over 150
file types, including viewing and printing support of Word and
WordPerfect for Windows 6.0, Excel 5, PowerPoint 4, PKZIP, MacWrite II
1.1, JPEG, GIF, MacPaint, and many others.

Question
Will Lotus release a Windows 95 version of cc:Mail?
Answer
Lotus is currently working on a 32-bit release that will also support
Windows 95 and any MAPI-compliant mail system. This release is
currently scheduled to be in beta by the end of 1995 and for customer
shipment in the first quarter of 1996. If you have Release 2.2 of
cc:Mail for Windows (LAN and Mobile), there is patch available that will
make it certified to run with Windows 95 and upgrade your copy to
Release 2.21. This patch is available on the Lotus cc:Mail BBS, Lotus
FTP Server and CompuServe LotusM as DESK221P.ZIP (for Desktop for
Windows 2.2) and CCMB221P.ZIP (for Mobile for Windows 2.2).
