GLOBAL SYSTEM SERVICES SPONSORS PROJECT DEEP BLITZ
64-bit PCs Using AMD Opteron™ Processors Rival IBM’s Deep
Blue Supercomputer
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA, January 26, 2006 –
Global System Services Corporation (“GSS”), a leading systems integrator and
software vendor, today announced Project Deep Blitz, a computer science research
project to determine if PC compatible computers using 64-bit AMD Opteron™ processors
can surpass IBM’s Deep Blue supercomputer.
Project Deep Blitz stresses overall
system design as well as microprocessor functions that correlate both with CPU
benchmarks such as SPEC and enterprise throughput-oriented benchmarks such as
TPC.
GSS, which provides performance
analysis and scalability services for large enterprises and service providers,
has begun moving customers to multi-core, 64-bit solutions. The implications of Project Deep Blitz indicate
how far customers can go using PC compatible technology compared with
alternative chip and computer system architectures.
“We see this as a significant
milestone in the progression of transistor density following
IBM’s Deep Blue supercomputer was an
RS/6000 SP based system with 32 15-million-transistor P2SC processors (480
million transistors) and 512 1.3-million-transistor Application Specific
Integrated Circuits (ASICs) (666 million transistors) totaling 1.15 billion
transistors. Dual-core AMD Opteron™ chips
contain approximately 233 million transistors thus only five chips total 1.17
billion transistors.
Project Deep Blitz is to use only off-the-shelf
components from AMD and affiliated vendors including multi-core 64-bit
processors, DDR memory, SATA RAID, gigabit networking, and PCI-E AMD Opteron™ processors support simultaneous
32-bit and 64-bit computing as well as Direct Connect Architecture for
multi-core CPUs and HyperTransport technology for high-speed input/output.
