GSS LAUNCHES GRID AND VIRTUALIZATION PRACTICE GROUP

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA, October 10, 2006 – Global System Services Corporation (“GSS”), a Sun Principal Partner and AMD Solution Provider, today announced that it has begun delivering grid computing and virtualization solutions based on Sun N1 Grid, VMware, and opensource virtualization technologies.  GSS’ Grid and Virtualization Practice Group helps customers consolidate servers and to automate server and application deployment and configuration management.

In the past, grid computing has been used mainly for research.  However, the technologies necessary to build and manage compute grids are directly beneficial to enterprises.

Grid computing allows any number of computers to be managed like a single machine.  To make this possible it is necessary to automate insertion and removal of physical machines, operating system installation and configuration, application deployment and configuration management and workload distribution.  These automation challenges exist in every large data center.  By meeting these automation requirements, Sun N1 Grid technology delivers vast cost savings to large enterprises.

The capabilities of current multi-core, 64-bit microcomputers far exceed the requirements of many applications.  However, applications often run on different operating systems and have disparate configuration requirements such as operating system tuning and version-specific dependencies on other software.  By compartmentalizing operating systems and applications within virtual machines on the same physical computer virtualization technology makes it possible to consolidate a large number of dedicated servers to a small number of more powerful computers.

Virtual machine technology and grid computing are complementary.  While virtualization allows a larger number of dedicated servers to be consolidated to a smaller number of computers, it does not reduce software complexity or administration overhead.  Grid computing solves these problems.

“We are working closely with large enterprise and government customers to solve practical problems with grid computing and virtual machine technologies,” said Ron Herardian, Managing Partner at Global System Services Corporation.  “The ability of these technologies to reduce data center operating costs and administrative overhead is absolutely compelling.”
